Purchasing Strong Wood Kitchen Chairs

Just about everyone can relate to at one time or another sitting on an older wooden kitchen chair that rocks when you sit on it, sways side to side, or just gives to a point of no return (lets hope you did not hurt yourself!). When analyzing wood kitchen chairs while shopping, we always inform the customer to turn the chair upside down.  All the clues and answers are not on the item description, price tag, advertisement, or even from some furniture salespeople. They are right there in front of you, underneath the chair.

Inspecting the Origin and Species of Wood Kitchen Chairs

After flipping over the selected kitchen chair of choice, the very first and important clue we usually find is a stamp or tag of the chair’s country of origin.  Where the wood kitchen chair comes from is very much related to probable wood species and how its built. For example, if the stamp says “Made in China” or “Made in Malaysia , nine times out of ten the chair is made from a popular local tree called “rubberwood”. Although rubberwood is classified as a hard wood, it is probably softest of all hardwoods used in the furniture industry. Softer woods do not hold up well at joints, glue lines, screws, bolts, etc., as harder woods like oak, birch, or maple. Therefore, look for wooden kitchen chairs made in the America, because we only use the proven hardest woods grown domestically from our local forests.

Wood Kitchen Chair Construction Features

After identifying the origin and species of the wood kitchen chairs, now we need to look at the joint construction. Standard wood chairs are constructed with four legs connecting to a square frame below the chair seat. Inspect for corner block reinforcements at this location. The worst chair would have no corner blocks, a better chair will have some type of corner blocks, and the strongest wood kitchen chair will have “finger-jointed” corner blocks. Corner blocks, chair legs are then anchored together with glue, screws, or threaded bolts. If possible, avoid chairs anchored together by threaded bolts. This chair type was invented to lower the cost by ready-to-assemble (RTA) construction by the average buyer and also allows the disassembled chair to be imported in a small box to lower the cost. They tend to loosen easy over time, after daily repetitive use from pressure and vibrations.

Domestic wood kitchen chairs are already assembled from the factory are delivered in a large box because they are glued and clamp dried with proven finger jointing and mortise and tenon joinery techniques.  An added feature to any wood chair is stretchers connecting between the chair legs.  Stretchers usually run horizontal to the floor provide extra assurance against the chair legs giving in. Chairs built in this fashion can not be assembled by the average buyer, but have a much higher lifespan, if not a lifetime.

Round Kitchen Tables

Round kitchen tables are very popular in floor-plan layouts that cannot afford the length of a rectangular shape table.  Today, most furniture stores offer 42″ round tables for their small table clients because it functions well in most standard kitchens.  However, in many kitchens like in town-homes, condos, city apartments, and others, 42″ round would still be too large. Our round kitchen tables can be made to the inch as small as 28″ in diameter.  We can probably make you an even smaller table if you desire a table for one!

In larger homes that like to host a larger crowd in the kitchen, a need for at least a 60″ round is required to comfortably sit 6 persons and squeeze more when needed.  Our round kitchen tables can be made as large as 84″ round in diameter that comfortably sits 10 persons. With can probably have our builders make you a larger round table if we had larger delivery trucks and you had larger doors!

Rectangle Kitchen Tables

Rectangle kitchen tables go well in narrower kitchen nook areas, but can afford to go longer in table length. 36″ wide by 48″ or 60″ long are the two typical rectangular kitchen table sizes offered in most furniture stores. Our rectangle tables can come smaller or larger to the inch per your request. For our special clients, we can offer a rectangular kitchen table as narrow as 20″, just enough wide for proper eating space.  For larger kitchens, we can make them as long as 150″ and beyond.

Inspecting Solid Wood Furniture

For solid wood dining and occasional tables, an easy way to identify the top is solid is by examining whether to top grain pattern exactly mirrors the grain underneath the table.  A perfect match means the the same piece of wood is solid all the way through.  There is a high probability that an inexpensive “wood-looking” table has a negative match and made out wood laminate veneer glued over high density hardboard, or as we call it, “compressed paper”. Chances are that when you have concluded that the table top is solid, the credible furniture maker created the entire table out of solid wood.

For solid case pieces, wall units, and bedroom shortage units, the same identifying methods with tables can apply. Today, many furniture makers like to cut costs by only making the visual parts such as door and drawer fronts only solid wood.  An easy way to examine these pieces in to pull out a drawer or open the doors to look inside. If the grain pattern of inside panels do not mirror the outside appearance, then again, it is not solid wood. By pulling out and examine the drawers, you can also see if the sides and backs or wood veneer or solid wood.

Dont be tricked by Solid Wood Furniture Marketing

After a little practice with visual analysis on solid wood furniture, should not ever be fooled again by the tricks of corporate furniture chains.  Also, try not to be tricked into the way wood furniture is labeled to the public. For example, cherry is a tree, not a color.  When you see an item labeled “cherry finished”, do not assume your buying a solid cherry wood heirloom that will last a lifetime.
